Michael Vick earns first win as head coach of Norfolk State Spartans
Down 23-10 with 3:27 to go in the third quarter, the stands started to empty at Dick Price Stadium. It looked like Michael Vick and his Norfolk State Spartans were set to fall to 0-2 to start the season.
Insert Otto Kuhns. For the second week in a row, the senior quarterback was placed into the game. Kuhns sparked the offense immediately, leading a nine-play, 70 yard touchdown drive to cut the deficit to six with 14:57 to play in the fourth quarter.
Not too long after, Kuhns lead the go-ahead six-play, 78 yard drive that gave the Spartans a 24-23 lead.
The game would eventually go into overtime tied at 31.
The Trojans possessed the ball first and would turn it over on downs. Spartans kicker Evan Helfrich then kicked a 29-yard field goal game-winning field goal to send NSU players and coaches into a massive celebration on the field.
“Thank you Jesus,” Vick said after the game when asked what he was thinking when the field goal went through the uprights. “I love what I’m doing. I love being around these guys every day… trying to motivate them. That’s our moment.”
Kuhns threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns for Norfolk State.
Vick and the Spartans play at Rutgers next week.
